Hurt: It’s Inevitable.

“You cannot protect yourself from sadness, without protecting yourself from happiness.”

– Jonathan Foer

“Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional.”

– Unknown

As I mentioned earlier, during this phase someone is going to hurt. Experiencing the hurt associated with enduring a breakup is often the only way out of this phase. So grit your teeth and prepare to pay the piper. You’ve heard of the adage “take the good with the bad.” Well this is the bad or negative aspect of having feelings for someone. In short, prepare to serve your “hurt sentence.” I realize this may sound rash, but the sooner you accept it and begin serving your time, the sooner it will all be over.

Perhaps I should write a disclaimer at this point in the book. This chapter is written as a theoretical treatise only. The information contained in it was originally written for class discussion purposes only. Let me be clear about something: this chapter should not serve as a substitute for professional help. If you or someone you know is experiencing a rather nasty breakup, please seek professional help.

During the span of a breakup, you are going to experience hurt. Plain and simple, you cannot avoid it. So don’t think that you, or anyone you know has the magic formula for avoiding such pain and suffering. Hurting is the only way out of this phase. So grit your teeth and prepare to pay the piper. You’ve heard of the adage, “Take the good with the bad.” Well this is the bad or negative aspect of having feelings for someone. In short, prepare to serve your sentence. I realize this may sound rash, but the sooner you accept it and begin serving your time, the sooner it will all be over. For more on how this hurt will evolve during a breakup, the chapter Hurt: It’s Inevitable will be helpful to anyone suffering through this stage.
