FRONT STAGE

According to Goffman, Front Stage is the region where we perform for any specific audience. Front Stage may be in our work environment. Then again Front Stage may be on a bus as its passengers stage roles for one another as the vehicle transits across the city. Then again Front Stage may be located at the grocery store where political activists either wear, or refuse to wear face masks while shopping.

However, let me be clear about something: what defines Front Stage is not its physical location. Front Stage (as well as Back Stage) is defined by the activity taking place in a given region. To be blunt; if you’re performing for an audience, the physical space where you are performing is Front Stage. Period.
